LAPD Chief Charlie Beck on the disconnect between LA and LAPD

Warren talks to LAPD Chief Charlie Beck 20 years after the Rodney King Riots. A sergeant at the time, Beck says that “even though it was a failure of the Los Angeles Police Department, it wasn’t just the failure of the Los Angeles Police Department.” He says that the community and the police department have a much better relationship today than back in ’92. “The police department was extremely overtaxed in those days,” he says,”that leads to a different style of policing, that style of policing is a lot like trauma surgery.”While Chief Beck says conditions have changed dramatically, there’s always a risk that bad police policies can spark civil unrest. “If you lose the public’s perception that you’re effective, and you lose the public’s perception that you’re fair, then you risk 1992.” Listen to the full interview below:
