DVR Overload: TV Guide’s Michael Schneider on the growth of scripted programming

Have you been working your DVR extra hard recently? A bunch of cable networks and even Netflix have been jumping into the original programming game. And we’re not talking reality shows. Michael Schneider, L.A. Bureau Chief for TV Guide Magazine, says we are in the midst of an explosion in the number of original scripted TV shows. Every network is has their showcase shows on Sunday nights, says Schneider, naming shows like “The Good Wife,” “Girls,” and “The Walking Dead.” “There’s not much room for the fluff anymore,” he says, and there’s not enough time to watch everything. Schneider spoke to KCRW about the proliferation of new scripted shows – and about what producers are doing to to get their programs noticed in an increasingly crowded field.
