From South Boston to Santa Monica: Whitey Bulger’s escape from the law

whiteybulgerSouth Boston mobster Whitey Bulger was one of America’s most wanted fugitives, hiding for 16 years before he was captured in Santa Monica with his longtime girlfriend in 2011.

The 83-year-old Bulger is in prison on charges of murdering 19 people and will stand trial this June in U.S. District Court in Boston.

On Wednesday, the prosecution and defense clashed over whether a judge, rather than a jury, should decide Bulger’s claim that a federal prosecutor promised him immunity for his crimes while he was an FBI informant.

Shelley Murphy is a veteran Boston Globe reporter and co-author, with Kevin Cullen, of the new book, “Whitey Bulger: America’s Most Wanted Gangster and the Manhunt That Brought Him to Justice.”

The book is out this week and Murphy spoke with us from the Boston Globe’s studios.
