No more San Onofre – now what?

The plant’s operator, Southern California Edison, has been lobbying the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to allow the plant to re-open at lower power for a trial period.

But after heavy opposition from activists and lawmakers, So Cal Edison surprised everyone when they announced last week that the nuclear plant would be shut down permanently.

Anti-nuclear activists hailed it as their victory; pro-nuclear folks claim the region’s electricity rates will soon skyrocket. And then there’s the whole issue of how exactly the decommissioning of San Onofre will occur, a process estimated to take decades and cost billions.

KCRW’s Steve Chiotakis spoke with Gustavo Arellano from the OC Weekly.
