Kerouac’s ‘Big Sur’ adapted to film

Josh Lucas and Jean-Marc Barr star as Neal Cassady and Jack Kerouac in “Big Sur”

There’s another movie about the life of Jack Kerouac that opens November 1st.

“Big Sur” looks at the writer’s time along the scenic California coast after his novel ‘On the Road’ was published in 1957 and fame began setting in.

Of course the words – and tempo – of Kerouac, and his compadre in chief, Neal Cassady, helped to identify and validate the Beatnik generation.

A group that relished in openness, recklessness, and, most of all, rhythm. Of life. And of mind.

But “Big Sur” – the name of the book Kerouac published in 1962 – highlights another of his mental breakdowns and heavy drug and alcohol use, with many epiphanies along the way.

Jean-Marc Barr and Josh Lucas play the roles of Kerouac and Cassady in the movie and they talked to KCRW’s Steve Chiotakis about the making of the film.
