Sue Grafton signs her book, X, at Chaucer’s Bookstore in Santa Barbara.

You may have heard of the Alphabet series. The mystery novels about detective Kinsey Millhone not only hit the New York Times Bestseller list as soon as they’re published, but are each set in the fair city of Santa Barbara (known in the books as Santa Teresa). And, despite her humility, author Sue Grafton is a local celebrity. A line curved out the door and around the corner last month at Chaucer’s Bookstore for the signing of her latest book, X.

24 books down and 2 to go, KCRW’s Jonathan Bastian caught up with Grafton as she began her national book tour.

On writing the Alphabet series:

“It is the great challenge of my life. Literally, I think of these books as a marathon. 26 novels, 26 miles. I can’t imagine another series, but I can’t imagine not writing. That is my life.”
